What if you could detect when a co-workerâs polite smile was actually disguising irritation? How might your negotiation tactics change if you could identify how the person sitting across the table from you actually felt? Clearly, being able to read people could serve as an incredible competitive advantage, both personally and professionally.
Although most of us would like to believe weâre pretty good at reading people, the truth is, we may not be quite as in tune with others as we might think. In fact, research shows technology may be interfering with our ability to read emotions. The more time we spent exchanging face-to-face conversation for digital communication, the less skilled we become at distinguishing non-verbal cues.
Recognizing how other people feel serves as a major social asset. Whether you accurately interpret a quick glance from a partner, or you notice your neighborâs disinterest in hearing your story, perceiving other peopleâs emotions correctly improves communication. Reading subtle â and even disguised â emotions could also provide a great deal of leverage in business transactions.
Thereâs even research that shows your ability to recognize emotions directly affects your wallet. A November 2014 study published in the
Tools to Improve Your Ability to Read Emotions
Paul Ekman, Ph.D., is the worldâs leading expert on emotions and facial expressions. Heâs been referred to as âthe best human lie detector in the world,â for his ability to detect microexpressions, the brief involuntary facial expressions that correlate to our emotions. In 2009, Ekman was named one of Timeâs most influential people.
Based on decades of research, Ekman developed several online training tools that show us how to read emotions â even when people are attempting to conceal them. These tools have been used by a variety of national security firms, law enforcement officials, salespeople, HR professionals and negotiators.
While the Micro Expression Training Tool (eMETT) teaches recognition of concealed emotion, the Subtle Expression Training Tool (eSETT) teaches recognition of âminiâ emotions. The tools provide training and tutorials that teach the audience to recognize how facial expressions reveal seven emotions: anger, fear, disgust, contempt, sadness, surprise or happiness. (There are several other tools on his website, along with complete explanations about which tool might be best suited for your needs).
Subtle differences in the movement of the eyebrows and corners of the mouth reveal a lot about emotion. Anger and disgust are often easily confused and at times, fear and surprise look somewhat alike. But recognizing those slight yet distinguishable differences in facial expressions could change the way you communicate.
My Experience Using the Training Tools
A couple of months ago I had the honor of speaking with Ekman about emotions and some of his research. He granted me access to his online training tools, but he also warned, âYou might not like what you see and once you learn it, you canât unlearn it.â
Within the few minutes of the training session, my ability to read emotions noticeably improved. And Ekmanâs warning began to sink in. Would I really want to know if my friends were bored with my stories? What if I discovered a co-worker had been suppressing some underlying contempt for me? Clearly, once you figure out how to read peopleâs emotions accurately, your social interactions, communication skills, and relationships could change forever. But, despite that warning, I chose to keep going.
During the pre-test, identifying a personâs emotions based on a quick flash of the individualâs face on the screen seemed impossible. But, after a few quick tutorials, the next round was much easier. In less than an hour, my skills remarkably improved and it was clear that the tools are incredibly effective.
In terms of real-world application, the knowledge I gained has been an extremely positive experience. There are plenty of times when I catch myself gaining a quick glimpse into how other people are feeling based on their subtle facial expressions. Itâs clear however, that sharpening my skills is certainly going to require ongoing practice.
I highly recommend checking out Ekmanâs training tools. For less than $100, and a few hours of your time, you can learn practical skills that may give you a major social advantage in business, as well as life.
